PMU is an abbreviation for Permanent makeup, also known as permanent cosmetics or micropigmentation, is ink or pigment typically used to give the look of everyday cosmetics—most often eyebrow pencil, eyeliner, or lip color. Like tattoos, the ink is placed in the skin, making it permanent. Although, it is a tattoo that needs color touch ups every 1-3 years as it does fade differently than a traditional tattoo.

With any form of PMU, at least two sessions are required to reach the desired outcome.

The first session of eyebrow and lip procedures is typically 2 hours, which includes extensive mapping to achieve the desired shape before beginning the procedure, so usually the tattooing lasts 1 - 1.5 hours.

Eyeliner procedures are shorter, usually lasting 1 - 1.5 hours total.

Never as bad as anyone expects! Clients are numbed topically prior to beginning the procedure, and also again once the skin has been broken after the first pass. The secondary numbing has a greater effect than the first topical, and since most of the procedure is done after this secondary numbing, most clients experience very little pain. (some could even fall asleep!) After the procedure, there can be a slight tenderness but typically doesn't last more than 1-2 days.

Most traditionally people hear the term microblading when referring to eyebrow PMU and it gained popularity when the service came back around a few years ago. It is the use of a hand tool with a small group of needles that creates a blade. This tool is dipped into pigment and then the artist hand draws small strokes resembling hair. It is often considered the most natural looking form of PMU for eyebrows as it blends into pre-existing eyebrow hair to enhance what is already there. This method is not suitable for all skin types and does not have the longevity that other types of implantation have.

Powder brows are another form of eyebrow PMU. This method uses a tattoo machine to implant pigment that resembles the look of eyebrows filled in with makeup. Depending on the treatment, it can have a very soft shaded look or be more saturated. By using a tattoo machine, this procedure is generally less painful and lasts longer than traditional microblading. It is suitable for almost every skin type and clients can go much longer in between touchups with less fading.

These two procedures can be combined to create a combo brow of strokes and shading to create a custom brow that best fits the client.

With all forms of eyebrow procedures, the immediate result is darker and bolder than what the healed color will look like. This usually lasts 5-7 days before they start to flake/scab and the healed color is usually 30-50% lighter than the day you get it done. There are after care instructions for a minimum of 10 days after getting it done, including no vigorous workouts (heavy sweating), no sauna/steam, no sun exposure, and no makeup on the treated area. Most clients experience itchiness/dryness between days 5-14 but find this to be more minimal when they follow the aftercare instructions.

Eyeliner, specifically a lash line enhancement. This is done using a tattoo machine and is the most natural eyeliner look. It can be done on top and bottom lash line to enhance the eyes with soft, smokey color. It typically only requires touchups every 3-5 years as it has more longevity than other procedures. Although this procedure is often worrisome as its so close to the eye, this procedure takes the least amount of time to do and has the least amount of downtime with minimal swelling and flaking/scabbing. Mascara is not allowed for 10 days following the procedure, lash growth serums must be stopped 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after, and fake lashes must be removed before the procedure and not put back on for 4 weeks.

Lip blushing or lip liner. These are done using a tattoo machine, and depending on the treatment can be a very subtle wash of color or be more saturated like the look of lipstick. Because lip skin turns over more rapidly than other areas of the body, this procedure fades more quickly, usually requiring touchups every 1-3 years. This procedure has a significant amount of downtime the first 5 days, where the color is very bold and lips are often swollen. They will then go through a scabbing/flaking process for another 5-7 days. Following this, many clients find the lips to be dry feeling and require constant moisturizing. If you have ever had a cold sore or fever blister we require you obtain a prescribed anti-viral medication before the procedure.

Generally speaking, we recommend to wait at least one week before we apply any permanent eyebrows or eyeliner after neurotoxin. It is necessary to wait 4 weeks after lip injections, laser resurfacing or chemical peel.

We recommend to wait 1 week to let the eyebrows heal completely before neurotoxin is injected. A brow lift should not significantly alter the shape of a permanent eyebrow. As far as lip injections are concerned, The lip color will not “run” or feather into the vertical lines around the lips and will enhance the overall look
